Project Description

This is our handmade, reclaimed wood media center. It is handmade by us and is made from wood that was reclaimed from a barge that was destroyed as a result of the 2011 Japanese tsunami.  The barge was built in 1968 and was anchored in Mission Bay (San Diego, CA).  The tsunami traveled thousands of miles from Japan, hit the California coast and caused the barge to break loose from its mooring. The wood has a beautiful patina with colors of red, brown, blue, turquoise, yellow and more (each piece of wood is different and variation is to be expected).

As shown, this piece has a thick reclaimed wood top that can be used as a TV, turntable, or aquarium stand.  If constructed at a lower height, it would make an impressive coffee table that could act as the centerpiece of your living room. The open area below is great for storing vinyl (be sure to state you need the lower area to be high enough).  It could also house audio components or any other electronics. The open backing on this area makes cable management a simple task!  If you’d prefer yours to have a back, we can build it with one at no extra charge (and can include an opening/holes for cables).

Below the open storage area are four reclaimed wood doors that create a media cabinet area. These doors have been constructed with gaps between the barge wood to exhibit the wood’s uniqueness and add a rustic character to the piece, but the doors could be constructed with different reclaimed wood, steel, or wire mesh to showcase your high-end audio components. Handmade gravity latches have also been installed on the doors to secure whatever may be stored inside.

**While we cannot guarantee remote signals will go through the gaps in the wood, an infrared repeater can be used to ensure remote signals will work.  These can be purchased on many e-commerce marketplaces for about $40.00.

The raw steel frame complements the barge wood perfectly but could be painted black at no additional charge. If you prefer another color, just let us know and we would be happy to price it. Our industrial rivets have not been installed on this piece, but they can be added at no additional charge (just be sure to request them). This particular modern media center also has four high-quality leveling feet, but could be made with straight legs for no additional charge or industrial style casters could be added (inquire for pricing).

There are many ways this piece can be used around the home, but it can also be used in a restaurant as a mise en place station, as a retail display in a boutique, or self-service bar in a hotel!

Please inquire about pricing on any other sizes, dimensions, configurations, or changes you would like.

NOTE: The reclaimed barge wood will vary significantly and can have many imperfections in it, including, but not limited to nail holes, differences in texture, splits, cracks, etc. This is what gives it its natural beauty!

We also create many other custom pieces in this and other styles, so, please contact us if you are looking for any other furniture such as, conference tables, bookcases, credenzas, or file cabinets. We would love to discuss how we can work together to design a unique piece to fit your needs!

Some of our past clients include Disney, Google, Wyndham Hotels, Hilton Hotels, Mishimoto, Holland America Cruise Lines, NBC Universal, YouTube, and LinkedIn. Our reclaimed wood and industrial furniture have also been used in Verizon and X-Box ads. Not to mention the countless number of wonderful small business owners and homeowners!
